I have always been a democrat, my mother was a democrat, my father was a democrat, their parents were democrats. So it is tradition in my family. Like most families I imagine, it is just understood you are a democrat. I have heard what democrats believed in all my life, and it made sense to me, I agreed with it. When I think of the democratic party, I thought of JFK. For those of you who don't know JFK was John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States. His ideology is so deeply connected to the democratic party for me, and perhaps romanticized, with Jackie (his wife) and the camelot legacy, that there is no question what my party affiliation is. When it came time to vote, the party I voted for was naturally democrat. If I was asked why I voted democrat I rambled off the pat answer of what I traditionally believed, from what I heard in my home.
It was not until recently since late 2022 that I began to think about what I believed, what it meant to be a democrat, what the democrats stand for. A very dear friend of mine said to me, you are a democrat right? I said yes. He said what do you believe in? I said a good income for myself, and federal aid in education, equal pay for equal rights and making the world better for everyone. That is what a democrat is, I said. I don't believe in homosexualty and multple genders, as the bible says God created man and woman for them to be together. I also don't believe in abortion. So my friend said are your groceries higher under a democratic administration? Yes. So it takes more of your income to live every day?...well, yes. So is that better for you? Well…I had no answer..., except to say, no it isn't..not really.
So my friend said you can't do that. I said what are you talking about? He said you just can't like certain parts of the democratic party and not others. You like what they stand for, but you don't like homosexuality and you do not support abortion. Yes, that is right, I said. But they (democrats) do. They believe in abortion (it has been going on a long time) and partial birth abortion.
They believe in multiple genders and changing genders. But that is dangerous, especially the changing of one's gender. Yes, it is dangerous, my friend said, but this is what it means to be a democrat. How is the inflation, the wars and the migrants coming into the United States benefiting you, helping you? Are your living conditions better now? No. Well then why are you supporting a party that is not making your life better? Because your parents did, and you are just blindly following tradition? And I had to tell the truth and say Yes. You just can't support bits and pieces of democratic policy, you have to believe everything the Democratic party supports.
How is the inflation, the wars and the migrants coming into the United States benefiting you, helping you? He asked again. Are your living conditions better now? No. Well then why are you supporting a party that is not making your life better?
This became my "Ah Ha" moment. What I believed, what I was holding onto were the beliefs of JFK. That is what he believed. He believed in social programs including federal aid to education, medical care for the elderly, lower taxes. Kennedy established the Peace Corps to help people in developing countries. When I think of JFK I think of a person who wanted a better world for everyone. The more I understand, the more I feel the version of the democratic party which existed during Kennedy's time, died when he did.
I can no longer support the democratic party, they are not in line with my views. They are allowing things to happen that are just plain wrong and evil. If you have a conscious and you know something is wrong, why not stop it, or why create the situation in the first place? As I said, up until recently I was a democrat. I was against Donald Trump. I believed what the media was telling me. Trump does not look like what we are used to seeing in a traditional president. He doesn't act like it. He doesn't fit the mold of what previous presidents looked and sounded like.
This doesn't mean he is a bad person and cannot be a good leader. All I know is that my life was better when he was in office. It took me a long time to come to the reality of what each political party stands for, and what is best for me in my everyday life. I think he is honest and will try his best to do what is right for the American people because he is a businessman.
I am sure I am not the only person whose life was better when he was in office, I said to my friend. So what did he do wrong, why was he brought up on charges? Well for one thing, he paid hush money to a porn star. Okay…What does that have to do with his ability to run the country? Well it doesn't, but if the leadership in power doesn't want him to become president again then actions will be taken to stop him. When there are people elected to office based on their promise to prosecute him, then it becomes a suffocating problem.
I heard someone say Trump ruined her life, assuming she is referring to his presidency. It was that comment that spurred me to write this article. When he was president I received a tax break as a business owner, the prices of groceries were down, inflation was down, and we were not involved in any wars. Donald Trump has a proven track record of making my life better. I don't believe these acts against him will stand. He made conditions better once and when he gets back in office he will do it again.
I cannot in good conscious, after not only living through a Trump and Biden administration but witnessing what has been done to a political rival, continue on the democratic party path.
